From 1 to 7 June, Queensland councils and their local communities will celebrate Local Government Week with a theme of ‘Sustainability’, featuring the tag line ‘Switched on Councils, Powering Queensland Communities into Sustainability’.
This is the 11th year anniversary of the event and the first Local Government Week celebration since amalgamations in 2008.
This year’s theme is particularly important as it helps reinforce the impact our daily activities have on the environment. It provides the ability for councils to demonstrate their own environmental commitment and activities and assist the community in identifying activities that will reduce our impact on the environment.
Councils will be hosting a range of activities across Queensland including activities such as:
- BBQ’s at newly opened recreational
facilities - launch of community gardens
- school visits
- school tours
- business breakfasts and lunches
- school green days – come dressed in
green.
Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) President, Councillor Paul Bell, is particularly enthusiastic about the event this year as Local Government Week will coincide with World Environment Day.
“Councils throughout Queensland coordinate events to celebrate World Environment Day, with initiatives aimed at sustaining the beauty of our communities,” Councillor Bell said.
“The fact that these two significant events will be held in the same week will be a great demonstration of the initiatives and partnerships councils undertake to become climate smart.”
The State Colouring Competition will again be rolled out in Queensland primary schools.
In an exciting first, Queensland high schools will have the opportunity to participate in a logo design competition for Local Government Week 2010. Students will be asked to design the logo Local Government Week 2010 Local Government in Communities.
A cash prize of $400 will be awarded to the winning student and $100 to the winning school.
The Principal Sponsor of the event is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
LGAQ and EPA will partner in producing a government awards category in recognition of councils’ green initiatives as part of the Climate Smart Awards.
