The changing role of Local Government

The role of Local Government is changing given the global financial crisis, climate change, peak oil, poverty and new governments in place.

Local Government is focusing more on improving its overall community wellbeing and facilitating the attraction of resources and strategic partners, rather than trying to do everything itself.

To address these challenges, the MAV is bringing together international and local experts for the 5th Future of Local Government Summit to explore the role of Local Government in this new world environment.

Previous FOLG Summits provided strategic focus for Local Government to give direction and a united approach on the sector’s future, and ways to achieve better partnerships and funding arrangements with other spheres of government.

The development of three FOLG frameworks – accountability, shared services and performance measurement – has been proceeding but FOLG 5 will explore the role of Local Government in this new world environment.

Given the global financial crisis, climate change, peak oil, poverty and new governments in place, it is time to review the roadmap established to date; threats and opportunities; and overseas Local Government trends.

To be staged on 6 and 7 May at the Spring Street Conference Centre in Melbourne, the Summit program includes:

  • Gerry Stoker, Professor of Politics and
    Governance, University of Southampton, England
  • Peter McKinlay, Director, Local Government Centre
    at Auckland University
  • Ron Kitchens, CEO, Southwest Michigan First
  • Roger Kemp, Senior Professor, Golden Gate
    University, San Francisco
  • Professor Robin Hambleton, Professor of City
Leadership, University of the West of England
  • Peter Salmon, QC, Chair, Royal Commission on
    Auckland Governance
  • Greg Hallam, CEO, Local Government Association
    of Queensland
  • Glenys Butler, Manager Community Strengthening,
    Wellington Shire Council.

Speakers have been challenged to review the direction of Local Government in light of the numerous crises now confronting the world.

The Local Government sector is determining its preferred future direction, rather than reacting to decisions by other stakeholders and levels of government.

Councillors, CEOs, directors and senior staff who want to influence the future of the sector are invited to be involved and influence the discussions.
