New look for favourite park

Located on the east coast of central Queensland, Mackay Regional Council is in the process of revamping several of its parks.

Its popular John Breen Park in North Mackay is sporting a new look, thanks to a $100,000 upgrade as part of Council’s Capital Works program.

The children’s playground within the park now has new coloured shade sails and rubber softfall around the area.

Council’s Parks and Environment Portfolio Councillor, Karen May, said the work will provide hours of enjoyment to local families.

“The quality of the work is to be commended and it certainly creates a new family friendly atmosphere,” she said. “The bright coloured sails are eyecatching, but importantly provide essential UV protection for the youngsters.”

The revamp of the playground forms part of Council’s ongoing improvements to parks in the area. Similar shade sails have been installed at three other parks.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor, Col Meng, said the work is part of Council’s commitment to provide quality recreational facilities across the region.

“Works similar to that completed at John Breen Park will be rolled out at some of our other parks in the near future,” he said.

The Rudd Labor Government has provided $1 million to Mackay Regional Council as part of the Community Infrastructure Program.

Council has identified 29 parks and playgrounds to receive upgrades as part of the Federal Government initiative, with work due to commence shortly.
