Sutherland Shire Council and Local Governments in the St George region of southern Sydney have received a $1.9 million grant from the NSW
Environmental Trust to rehabilitate a popular recreational waterway, the
lower Georges River.
The three St George councils – Hurstville, Kogarah and Rockdale – are collaborating with Sutherland Shire on the project. It will result in the restoration of riverside vegetation and habitats and increase community awareness about environmental sustainability.
A sustainability plan will be prepared for the catchment on behalf of the councils, Georges River Combined Councils’ Committee and the Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority.
The project will ensure the sustainable management of the lower Georges River and will provide a more efficient and holistic strategic planning framework for the entire river. In particular, the project will complement other urban sustainability projects in the mid and upper parts of the catchment, which have also been funded by the NSW Environmental Trust.
It will also strengthen protection of environmentally sensitive areas, reduce erosion and sedimentation along the river and improve stormwater management.
The grant will assist the councils to improve recreational experiences, encourage the establishment of new community environmental groups and promote a sense of civic ownership and care for the lower Georges River.
