Coffs Harbour City Council has been successful in relocating a pair of young ospreys that had established their nest on a light at Council’s velodrome last year.
Council had to relocate the nest as it was posing a fire threat and meant the particular light could not be used.
Council’s Events and Local Sports Coordinator, Leanne Atwal, said ospreys always return to their previous nest sites, so Council immediately began looking for an alternative location when they left last season.
“In March, the old nest was taken from the light and placed on a specially designed, manmade pole and cradle close to a woodland area at the Velodrome,” she said.
“In the last few weeks, a pair of adult ospreys and a chick have been spotted in the nest. The family appears to have moved into the nest after the youngster was fledged.
“It must have been the great ocean views and ‘dress circle’ location that attracted them. It has to be one of Coffs Harbour’s most desirable addresses.”
