Flavours of the world in Sydney’s backyard

In July, more than 35,000 foodies from all over Sydney attended Bankstown Bites to enjoy the international culinary mix of locally prepared foods, which Bankstown is fast becoming famous for.

Held each year, Bankstown Bites is a chance to experience the tastes, aromas and textures of the Middle East, southeast Asia and Europe.

Located in the geographical heart of Sydney, Bankstown is known as a ‘food capital’.

It is one of the largest Local Government Areas in New South Wales, with approximately 180,000 residents speaking more than 60 different languages.

Guided Discovery Food Tours are one of the features that make Bankstown Bites so special.

Costing only $2, these sampler tours offer visitors an insight into the ingredients and cooking methods used for various traditional meals, and of course, the all important taste test.

This year, several tours were on offer, including Sweet Treats, European Delights, Asian Explorer, and Treats from the Middle East.

Each tour involved a walking journey through food businesses within the central Bankstown area, and a chance for an ‘off the beaten track’ insight into Bankstown’s culinary hot spots.

“No one knows Middle Eastern or Vietnamese cuisine quite like the chefs and local business owners of Bankstown,’’ said Bankstown Mayor Tania Mihailuk.

This year’s Bankstown Bites also included cooking demonstrations from celebrity chef, Fast Ed (Ed Halmagyi) from Better Homes and Garden’s, live performances, food stalls and children’s cooking crafts.

Bankstown also claims to have the best coffee in Sydney, the best ice cream in Australia and the best Vietnamese soup this side of Saigon.
