Youth mag hits the streets

In June, the first edition of Melton Shire Council’s quarterly youth magazine ‘No Restrictions’ was distributed to local students in years six through to 12.

Located 20 kilometres west of Melbourne’s CBD, the Shire of Melton is a fast growing area, averaging 30 new babies and 38 new households each week. Just under 19 per cent of the Shire’s population is aged 12 to 24 years.

Officially launched at a special function at the Melton Youth Facility on 17 June, the first edition of the No Restrictions magazine includes articles on local events, young people’s artwork, creative writing, band and movie reviews, recipes and important contact numbers.

The magazine features work by local young people and members of the No Restrictions youth editorial team, comprising 18 young people aged between 12 and 19. The team is responsible for all aspects of production, including choosing articles, magazine layout and graphic design.

Melton Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Renata Cugliari, said the young people involved in the production of No Restrictions should be proud of their achievements.

“No Restrictions is a valuable opportunity for young people to build their skills, gain confidence and see their work in print,” she said.

No Restrictions is an initiative of the Common Solutions Project, supported by Melton Shire Council, the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria, the Transport Accident Commission and the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation.

The second edition will be distributed through local schools in early September.
