Playford harnesses aspiring leaders

The City of Playford in Adelaide’s northern suburbs has just launched its Aspiring Leaders Development Program (ALDP).

The program provides staff from across Council with the opportunity for additional personal and professional development.

Central to this program are the contemporary concepts, theories and practices of leadership.

The 11 month program comprises a number of workshops, participation in the South Australian Local Government Managers Australia Challenge, community activities, work based projects, 360 degree appraisals and a final presentation.

One on one professional coaching/mentoring opportunities are also interwoven between workshops.

During 2009/10, eight staff members have so far experienced:

  • one on one executive coaching
  • feedback in a 360 degree assessment
  • critical analysis of individual leadership
  • development of a personalised learning contract.

During September and October each participant will plan their own community and volunteering learning activities within the City of Playford.

These activities include volunteering at the Council’s Northern Sound System, which hosts the annual music festival Elizapalooza.

Elizapalooza celebrates creative music, energy and the talent of people in the north of Adelaide. It provides a unique opportunity to experience live music in a festival atmosphere.

Additionally, ALDP participants will volunteer time and energy to assist staff and volunteers in Council’s Grenville Centre. The Centre provides a friendly and supportive environment fostering ongoing independence and mobility to the socially isolated or aged.

Services include home assist programs and community food cooperatives.

Participant feedback on the ALDP program has been very positive.

“The program provides insight into different leadership styles, how to work with different personalities and knowledge of what drives people,” said Council’s Legal and Policy Advisor, and ALDP participant, David Chehade.

“If I can learn more about leadership, hopefully I can work towards a leadership role myself.”
