Free online business directory for Sydney’s Northern Beaches

Sydney’s three Northern Beaches councils – Manly, Pittwater and Warringah – are encouraging local businesses to sign up to a free online business directory.

In October, the three councils came together to launch the ‘Be Local, Buy Local’ campaign, which seeks to encourage local residents to shop in their own neighbourhood.

The key component of the campaign is a free online business directory that provides a forum for businesses to register their contact details, enabling residents to search for local traders.

Manly Council General Manager Henry Wong said the website came about as a result of concerns over the local impact of the global financial crisis.

“We want to stimulate the local economy and make it as easy as possible for our residents to find the business they want in their own street or their own neighbourhood,” he said. “There is a whole host of reasons why we should all be shopping locally – from addressing environmental issues, to the simple act of building community.

“This website will connect businesses with customers and we hope it will create a win win situation for all.”

Pittwater Mayor Harvey Rose said a joint initiative was logical for the Northern Beaches area.

“There is an easily identifiable area from the Spit to Pittwater, and within that area we have a range of all the businesses residents could need,” he said.

Warringah Mayor Michael Regan said the initiative is not about protectionism but about Council performing its duty.

“A strong business community is vital for a strong community and that’s what this initiative is all about – enhancing our community as a whole,” he said.

Manly Mayor Jean Hay said the global financial crisis is affecting the Northern Beaches, and is particularly evident in unemployment figures.

“These figures represent real people here in our neighbourhoods when businesses hurt, our community hurts,” she said. “That’s why we’re encouraging people to think twice about their choices as consumers.”
