Is graffiti devaluing your area?

Unsightly graffiti can impact upon the vitality of town centres adversely affecting local businesses and tourism operators. At the neighbourhood level, damage to private residences, commercial and Council property undermines local amenity, visitor numbers and community pride.

Western Australia’s City of Cockburn has stepped up its fight against graffiti, introducing an easy means for residents and local businesses to remove unwanted scrawls and tags.

Free graffiti removal kits, containing a pair of gloves, three single Safewipe pouches and three single Afterwipe pouches, are able to remove graffiti from nearly all types of surfaces.

Cockburn Mayor, Councillor Logan Howlett, said that the city is working hard to remove graffiti right across the district and the new DIY kits should help make the region more beautiful.

“Graffiti is a costly and unsightly presence and prompt graffiti removal is seen as best practice because it diminishes the level of recognition and reward achieved by graffiti vandals,” he said. “We want Cockburn to remain an attractive place to live and visit and getting the community involved in graffiti removal is a great way of finding a local solution to a local problem.”

Under the City of Cockburn’s graffiti policy, offensive graffiti will be removed within two working days after being reported to Council and five working days if non offensive. The City of Cockburn is also one of only a few local councils that removes graffiti from residential homes at no cost.

If the graffiti is too large, or cannot be removed using the wipes, residents can call Council’s graffiti hotline.
