Triple bottom line governance vital for smart infrastructure*

Stage One of Hinchinbrook Shire Council’s TYTO Precinct is a hub of ‘smart infrastructure’, according to Robert Prestipino, Director of Vital Places.

“That’s infrastructure which promises this community a more resilient and sustainable future, because it has been built on strong community engagement, accountability, and Local Government leadership,” Robert Prestipino said.

The TYTO precinct is part of the Shire’s multi award winning Our Town Our Future (OTOF) Revitalisation Strategy, which was codeveloped by Vital Places and has secured more than $10 million in State and Federal infrastructure funding.

“OTOF exemplifies how Local Government can help communities shape their future by investing in smart infrastructure. However, the secret to the success of transforming communities through triple bottom line outcomes is good governance,” Robert said.

Mayor of Hinchinbrook Shire Council, Pino Giandomenico, said that working closely with the community is a vital ingredient.

“Through OTOF we have learned that the key to a future that protects our lifestyle and identity lies in setting a vision with the community and having the courage to make it happen,” the Mayor said.

Council’s CEO Robert Clark agrees.

“OTOF helped us identify what was unique to us and what needed to be developed in our Local Government area,” Robert Clark said. “It’s highlighted the important role Council can play in securing a future that reflects local values.”

Councillor Sherry Kaurila added that even in its first phase of development, the TYTO Precinct has delivered new public facilities as well as a catalyst for change that will strengthen the local community.
