Rockhampton region – real, relevant, rewarding

Don’t just dream about a tropical winter in sunny Central Queensland – register now to be inspired and challenged at the Sister Cities Australia (SCA) 2010 National Conference in the Rockhampton Region from 11 to 14 July.

You’re invited to explore how to make your Sister City relationships even more real, relevant and rewarding for your communities, while enjoying warm winter days at Capricorn Resort Yeppoon.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor, Councillor Brad Carter, said he is excited to host this year’s SCA National Conference and to showcase the Rockhampton Region to the rest of Australia, while attracting substantial economic benefits that will flow on throughout the community.

He said the conference will also celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Region’s Sister City relationship with Ibusuki in Japan.

“This year we celebrate 30 years of embracing opportunities for cultural and educational exchange with our Japanese ‘relatives’ in our Sister City of Ibusuki,” Councillor Carter said.

“Friendships like this build trust and respect over the years, which build economic, business and cultural development opportunities for our community.

“I encourage Local Government delegates to register for this conference to examine their own sister city relationships.”

President of Sister Cities Australia, Devonport City Council Alderman Bill Wilson, said Sister City visits have been educating and enlightening communities for more than 50 years.

“The experience of meeting and hosting like minded world citizens brings enormous benefit to all parties,” he said. “Throughout the history of the Sister City movement, Australia has forged nearly 500 links which have provided huge cultural, educational and economic benefits.

“It is with great pleasure that Sister Cities Australia Inc has accepted the bid by Rockhampton to host the 2010 National Conference.

“This conference will bring delegates from countries including the USA, Japan, China, South Korea and New Zealand, and youth will also be involved in their own leadership program which will run concurrently with the main conference.

“Visitor numbers to Rockhampton will be in the vicinity of up to 200 and the exposure both nationally and internationally will be priceless to the region.”

Access to Rockhampton is easy. The newly redeveloped Rockhampton Airport is exceptionally well serviced with multiple flights to and from Brisbane daily, direct flights from Townsville, Sydney and Melbourne, and connections onto other ports around Australia and internationally.
