LGAQ: amalgamation compensation disappointing

Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) President, Councillor Paul Bell, has described the compensation allocated to amalgamated councils as disappointing.

Queensland Local Government Minister Desley Boyle announced the funding on 15 April.

“We have previously estimated compensation for the massive costs involved in the amalgamations at $200 million,” Councillor Bell said. “The $18.6 million allocated to just six councils is a mere fraction of this. It is also disappointing that the Government has taken so long to come to this decision.

“Minister Boyle has announced compensation to Isaac Regional Council of $4.06 million; North Burnett Regional Council $348,000; Scenic Rim Regional Council $2.79 million; South Burnett Regional Council $1.127 million; Southern Downs Regional Council $2.38 million; and Torres Strait Island Regional Council $7.58 million.

“I’m sure these councils appreciate their allocations, but I know some councils that missed out will want to know why. Councils and their communities will pass judgement on what is fair and reasonable as they battle ongoing cost constraints. Councils will need to craft their upcoming budgets with consideration to the effects of this decision.”
