Do you know any female leaders who champion healthy heart initiatives?

Nominations are now open for The National Heart Foundation of Australia and the Australian Local Government Women’s Association’s (ALGWA) one off Go Red for Women Leadership Award, to recognise a female leader in Local Government.

With 2010 as the Year of Women in Local Government, this provides the Heart Foundation and ALGWA with an important opportunity to collaborate in raising the profile and awareness about heart health in women.

Go Red for Women is the Heart Foundation’s campaign to raise awareness of heart disease as a women’s health issue and promote healthier choices.

“Local Government is an important sector for improving heart health, as councils play a vital role in the investment into local community services, programs and activities,” said Darriea Turley, National President of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association.

Heart disease remains Australia’s biggest killer of women. More than 11,000 women die each year from heart disease but the good news is that it is largely preventable.

“We are pleased to be collaborating with ALGWA on the Go Red for Women Award, to recognise a female champion leading successful healthy heart initiatives in Local Government,” said Dr Lyn Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of the Heart Foundation.

“We are calling for nominations acknowledging women who might run programs promoting physical activity, advancing smoke free policies or ensuring healthy food choices are available.”

The winner of the Go Red for Women Leadership Award will be announced at the Australian Local Government Womens Association Conference, held in Sydney on 25–27 November 2010 and will receive $1,000 for their council and a plaque recognising their outstanding success.

If you know a female leader who champions healthy heart initiatives, nominations must be received by 5pm on Friday 15 October 2010.
