Randwick encouraged to ‘Walk It Off’

Randwick City Council is encouraging businesses and residents in the Kingsford and Kensington areas to join ‘Walk It Off’ ­– a new sustainable transport initiative.

The initiative is designed to encourage residents to shop locally, while at the same time promoting sustainable transport and reducing local traffic congestion. It is aimed at reducing the impact of motor vehicles locally, as well as promoting local food outlets.

Randwick Mayor John Procopiadis said he was thrilled with the number of local cafes and restaurants that have signed up for the project.

“The initiative features a loyalty card, which will be stamped each time residents present it at participating cafes and restaurants when purchasing lunch or dinner worth $8 or more,” he said.

“Once they have six stamps on their loyalty cards, residents can go into the draw for wonderful prizes.”

More than 12,000 loyalty cards have been distributed to Kensington and Kingford residents.

‘Walk it Off’ is part of Randwick Council’s sustainable transport project funded by the New South Wales Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water.

Council’s Sustainable Transport officer, Jacqui Symonds said around 25 retailers are participating in the campaign.

“The program aims to promote local businesses and encourage increased patronage in local shops,” she said. “It will also help to reduce local traffic congestion and pressure on parking spaces, as well as promoting positive surveillance for the community.”
