Governance not service delivery?

At last year’s Future of Local Government Summit the proposition put was that Local Government’s core role in the future will be governance, not service delivery. This recognises that Councils cannot ‘do’ everything and that they need to increasingly focus on facilitating strategic alliances to deliver defined community outcomes.

This future would see a reduction in the role of councils as monopoly providers, and would be likely to support increased innovation. On the other hand, intercouncil collaboration and shared services may be the preferred future. But what will be the driver(s) for change? We all ask for more funding, but do we know how to win the game?

Future of Local Government Summit is one event that always assists participants with their Local Government careers, whether it is as an elected representative or as an officer. This year’s Future of Local Government Summit on 29 and 30 June, features a brilliant array of national and international speakers, including:

  • ‘Localism and Realism’, Sarah Phillips, Deputy Director, Centre for Public Service Partnerships, UK
  • ‘Local Government should be the most influential lobby group in Australia’, Graham Richardson
  • ‘How important is the performance of Local Government?’ Professor Graham Sansom, Director, Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government
  • ‘Transition Towns: creating local sustainable communities beyond oil dependency’ Rob Hopkins, cofounder of the global Transition Network
  • ‘Local Government service delivery and new community development models for addressing delivery of human services’, Professor Mildred Warner, Cornell University, New York
  • ‘Rewire your head: getting ahead of the curve”, Mike McAllum, Founder, Global Foresight Network
  • a range of prominent Australian Local Government representatives.
