Innovative development

The Mount Gambier Library and the development of the Civic Precinct has proven to be a benchmark for community engagement and social inclusion with patrons and well seasoned visitors continuing to reinforce the leading status of the Library on a comparative global scale.

Nearing completion, the Main Corner Redevelopment promises to extend the community vibrancy of the Civic Precinct and provide the City with a suite of impeccable venues that can be used for an unlimited number of purposes. This will promote business attraction and elevate the city’s standing as a serious contender for Event Tourism.

Once the landscaping of the Main Corner is complete it is proposed to extend the project in accordance with plans developed in 2007, and refurbish the Commercial Centre of the city to further support business attraction.

The Main Corner Development is a key component of Council’s Towards 2015 Vision to create a cultural and heritage precinct centred around the City’s Civic Precinct that incorporates the Riddoch Art Gallery, City Hall and the Cave Garden.

Having a state of the art multi purpose facility on the Main Corner of the city will be a major boost for the arts in the local community and heavily supports Council’s attraction strategies to draw major conferences and exhibitions and to be sought out as the destination to host such corporate events.

Regional and often national organisations have already made effective use of the existing well planned City Hall facility and this is set to increase.

The Riddoch Art Gallery is South Australia’s premier regional gallery; it houses the largest collection of visual arts outside Adelaide and is fundamental to the cultural life of Mount Gambier.
