Yarra Ranges embrace new library service

When Yarra Ranges Council conducted a review of its mobile library services in 2011, it discovered the service was not reaching its audience.

The service had been in operation for more than 15 years without any significant modifications to meet changing demographics, needs and expectations.

In response to this research the council opened three local reading rooms in Yarra Glen, Monbulk and Upwey allowing Eastern Regional Library members to browse, borrow, return, reserve and collect library materials via self–service.

Council also launched a new flexi–service vehicle equipped with slide out shelving for books, DVDS and other resources including a computer.
Yarra Ranges Economic and Community Development Manager Ali Wastie said the community had wholeheartedly embraced the new model.

“The new vehicle will deliver children’s programs including story time sessions, making stops at a number of playgroups across the Yarra Ranges,” Ali said.

The vehicle will also deliver library services straight to the door of aged care facilities as well as visiting caravan parks, festivals and events.

“This ensures that residents who are unable to get to our community reading rooms or branch libraries have access to high quality library services,” she said.

To date the reading rooms have proved a resounding success, with attendance figures significantly higher than those of the previous mobile library.
In July 2012 the Council opened a reading area in Sherbrooke Children’s centre that is mainly stocked with engaging children’s books.

“The reading area also has a selection of materials to help parents and carers navigate their way through the exciting and formative first five years of a child’s life,” Ali said.

Monbulk Reading Room’s collection will more than double when the neighbouring Monbulk Primary School’s library is progressively moved over this year.

The Living and Learning Centre, where the Monbulk Reading Room is located, also provides computer and Internet access.

Council’s Community Link is located at the Living and Learning Centre so staff members are available to assist residents.
