The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters has been awarded the Stormwater Industry Association (SIA) ‘Excellence in Infrastructure’ Award, for the state-of-the-art stormwater management system, which was engineered and installed as part of the major redevelopment of Dunstone Grove-Linde Reserve in Stepney.
ity of Norwood Payneham & St Peters Mayor, Robert Bria, said winning the ‘Excellence in Infrastructure’ Award was a tremendous achievement for the Council and its project partners, Wallbridge & Gilbert Consulting Engineers Pty Ltd and Hassell, in recognition of the significant and outstanding work that was undertaken to redevelop Dunstone Grove-Linde Reserve, Stepney.
“The redevelopment of Dunstone Grove-Linde Reserve was a significant project for the Council and its project partners and was completed in October 2011, following a long process of concept development, consultation, design, engineering and construction works,” said Mayor Robert Bria.
“The broader project focused on enhancing many aspects of the Reserve, in particular, environmental sustainability and the integration of stormwater management components, with a focus on delivering best practice Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) outcomes,” he said.
As part of the Design Team, Wallbridge and Gilbert Engineers Pty Ltd were engaged by the Council to engineer the integration of best practice stormwater management into all infrastructure upgrades of the Reserve, which included a state-of-the-art Stormwater Harvesting and Bio-filtration System.
In announcing winners of the ‘Excellence in Infrastructure’ category at the 2012 SIA Awards, the judging panel said that the Dunstone Grove-Linde Reserve Upgrade exemplified the potential that lies in green infrastructure as a means of managing stormwater, while also enhancing public open space, promoting biodiversity and creating healthy neighbourhoods.
The panel was also impressed with the “skilful design of a complex set of strategies, which represented excellence in both the individual components and the whole system design.”
“This Project demonstrates the latest in stormwater management practices and the Council’s proactive commitment in the delivery of sustainable environmental outcomes, in conjunction with the revitalisation of an open and accessible community space,” said Mayor Bria.
“The state-of-the-art system allows for the treatment of stormwater to the required standards, allowing the capture and retention of stormwater, via injection into the fractures within a bedrock aquifer 156 metres below the ground and re-use of the stored stormwater for the irrigation of the Reserve and ultimately, other parks within the region,” he said.
The Dunstone Grove-Linde Reserve Redevelopment Project will be entered into the Stormwater Industry Association National Awards, to be judged and announced in October 2012.
