Beachside Scarborough gets major boost

The City of Stirling and Tourism WA have joined forces, signing a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the intent of working together to create a quality beachside tourism precinct in Scarborough.

The Mayor of Stirling, Councillor David Boothman, said that both parties recognised the potential for Scarborough Beach to be one of Western Australia’s most successful tourism precincts.

“The City is focused on seeing Scarborough projected to the pinnacle as a tourism destination in WA and Tourism WA has identified the Scarborough Beach redevelopment as one of the top tourism development priorities for the State.”

The City has already invested over $9 million in the area, improving the streetscape along The Esplanade and constructing a major amphitheatre capable of hosting international events.

The amphitheatre has already played host to many national and international events, such as the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (the ‘Aussies’), XXXX Beach Cricket and the National Volleyball Championships, as well as other large public festivals and events.

“Along with the City’s $60 Million Scarborough Beach Urban Design Master Plan, which aims to redevelop the foreshore areas (anticipated to commence in 2013), the City’s District Planning Scheme No.3 and associated local planning policies have facilitated additional development capacity within the area, Scarborough is set to be the next big tourism destination in WA,” said Councillor Boothman.

“The City is keen to facilitate development proposals that will result in positive tourism outcomes in Scarborough and we are thrilled that Tourism WA also shares our vision for the area.”

As part of the agreement, Tourism WA will be providing strategic tourism planning, event and marketing advice, assisting the City with the development of an events and activities plan as required by the City, and will also consider opportunities to promote Scarborough through its marketing campaigns.
