Melton City Council has welcomed the announcement of $600,000 over three years to fund a collaborative project to help prevent violence against women and their children in the western region.
The ‘United: Working Together to Prevent Violence Against Women in the West’ project, to which Melton City Council is a signatory, will use the funding to implement a unique, first of its kind prevention program.
The funding was announced by the Victorian Minister for Crime Prevention, Andrew McIntosh, under the State Government’s Reducing Violence Against Women and their Children (RVAWC) grants.
Melton City Council Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Tori welcomed the funding: “This project will further build capacity within all partner organisations to engage in primary prevention work in the west, including gender equity planning and training.”
In June 2012, Melton City Council became a signatory to the Preventing Violence Together: Western Region Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against Women. The plan is supported by a partnership of 14 agencies across the western metropolitan region, led by Women’s Health West and including community health, women’s health and local councils in the western region.
The project will build on the strong foundation created by the Preventing Violence Together model, as a fully collaborative and integrated approach to preventing violence before it occurs.
Partners involved in the United project are: City of Melbourne, Brimbank City Council, Doutta Galla Community Health Service, HealthWest Partnership, Hobsons Bay City Council, Inner North West Primary Care Partnership, ISIS Primary Care, Djerriwarrh Community Health Service, Maribyrnong City Council, Melton City Council, Moonee Valley City Council, Western Integrated Family Violence Committee, Western Region Health Centre, and Wyndham City Council.
