Be prepared with ‘REDiPlan’

The Town of Victoria Park in Western Australia is working with the Australian Red Cross in providing training for emergency preparedness to community members.

In December 2012, 22 community members attended an Australian Red Cross ‘REDiPlan’ training session at the Town’s Leisurelife Centre.

Attendees, who were from the Town and surrounding suburbs, watched video stories of people involved in large disasters who had commented on the need to be prepared.

The presentation then ran through the four steps in being prepared for an emergency, which are: be informed, make a plan, get an emergency kit, and know your neighbours.

Those who attended the training received a free starter emergency kit containing a water bottle, a crank powered torch, an ID lanyard, the ‘REDiPlan’ emergency folder and booklet, and an Australian Red Cross pen.

Town of Victoria Park Mayor, Trevor Vaughan was pleased with the attendance at the first workshop.

“It is always best to be prepared for the unexpected and through this program we hope to assist residents on being just that,” he said.

“Post-workshop survey results show all attendees felt more prepared and would carry out actions at home to prepare their house in case of emergency.”
