Upgrade transforms waterfront playground

The playground near Cunningham Pier in the City of Greater Geelong has undergone a revamp, featuring play equipment that complements the area, making it unlike any other playground in the City.

Designed by the City’s Capital Projects Landscape Architect, Tom Leggatt, the playground now features a range of custom built equipment, including a deck area with a lookout and a fire pole, ‘talking tubes’ that act as communication points across the playground, a slide and rope net, and a rock boulder seating area for parents.

A clinker-built boat, which has been renovated by members of the Geelong Community Men’s Shed, also features in the playground.

In the process of selecting what equipment to use, the designers studied the way that children were playing in the existing park. They noticed that kids were running across the hills, which, over time, had created a trail.

As a result, a pathway was created along the trail out of rubber paths sunk into the ground. Plants were placed alongside the path, giving it a maze-like feel.

Council’s Brownbill Ward portfolio holder, Councillor Michelle Heagney, said that the new playground equipment and layout would excite kids.
“The new equipment is fantastic, and practical for young children in particular, as it is safe, easy to climb on and user friendly,” said Cr Heagney.

“It’s a very popular playground and the hilly backdrop provides hours of entertainment for kids to run up and down.”

“As the Waterfront is one of Geelong’s most iconic locations, I’m the sure the revamp will attract many to the area. It looks fantastic and I’m glad the park is now re-opened for people to enjoy,” said Cr Heagney.
