Coffs Harbour City Council has provided free WiFi Internet throughout the City Square as part of its city centre marketing strategy.
Launched in September last year by Mayor Denise Knight, the occasion was celebrated with a variety of digital and non-digital offerings, including opportunities to try out a tablet PC, have some fun with the ‘Just Dance’ app, or listen to some of the musicians and performers as part of the Buskers Festival.
The new ‘Switched On Coffs’ service is not only a drawcard for residents, but makes the city centre an added attraction for visitors, with website links providing holidaymakers with direct and easy access to major local attractions and services.
Users first access a homepage that has links to the library, information on key events and a Facebook page for city centre businesses and retailers. From the homepage users can then access websites of particular interest.
Coffs Harbour City Council Economic Development Manager, Jennifer Oloman said that, “Council initiated the project in response to the community’s input into the ‘Switched On Coffs Digital Strategy’, which identified the provision of free WiFi as fundamental to assisting equal access to services.
“We expect free Internet to transform City Square into a virtual office space and meeting point for the community. With people now able to access online services in the city centre, business can literally be conducted anywhere, anytime,” said Ms Oloman.
