Cunnamulla has undergone a transformation, following the relocation of a museum from the back at the library to the Cunnamulla Tourist Centre.
The spacious room was deemed unsafe when the ceiling began to cave in and had to be closed off.
In 2012 Paroo Shire Council received a grant from the Local Government Grants Scheme to repair the room and renovate it for library use. The amazing transformation has been well received by the community.
Reactions from Cunnamulla State School students included: “Wow! This looks mad!” and “Oh man, look at all the room now!”
The library also successfully applied for a Creating Community Spaces Grant through State Library of Queensland.
The grant will enable Cunnamulla Library to become a more inviting place, with sofas for young adults, colourful furniture for the children’s area and new computer desks.
The library has become a hub for children after school and during holidays. An After School Reading Club twice a week is aimed at improving literacy and encouraging more children to read.
Once a month the library holds a Seniors/Students Buddy Reading Program, where residents of Yapunyah Lodge and other local community seniors, including Indigenous elders, come to read and play games with children from Cunnamulla State School, who are chosen to come to the library as a good behaviour incentive.
