The Right Back @ U Mentoring program, an initiative of Sunshine Coast Council’s Caloundra Regional Gallery, has brought together seven emerging artists with disabilities with five experienced artists as mentors through a series of workshops.
Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the Right Back @ U mentoring program provided creative opportunities for local artists living with a disability.
“Right Back @ U recognises the important contribution that people living with a disability make to Australia’s artistic and cultural activities.
“It also empowered artists with a disability to have a stronger voice within the arts sector.
“Council’s vision was to provide artists living with disability with a mentor who can coach them through the process of art-making and the satisfaction of building a body of work for exhibition, taking their arts practice to the next level.
“Right Back @ U is about providing professional development for both mentor and mentee and creates opportunity for the artists to expand their networks and potential collaborations with other artists as well.
“The colourful and beautiful artworks produced during the mentoring period are currently on display at Caloundra Regional Gallery until 25 August 2013.”
Sunshine Coast Council acknowledges the community organisations who generously supported the program with in-kind donation of access to their facilities for the mentoring program.
