Community comes together for land transfer

Aurukun community has seen a long awaited land transfer come to fruition.

250 people, comprising many visitors, local residents, and dignitaries were in attendance on September 18 at the Town Square to see an optimistic and positive coming together for Aurukun people.

The day’s highlight was a performance from the local school band who received warm applause.

It is a great sign for Aurukun’s future to see its youth perform so professionally and confidently.

Aurukun Shire Council representatives and Ngan Aak-Kunch directors proudly accepted the deeds for the long awaited land transfers.

Following the transfer, the Shire Lease will be cancelled and the land will become Aboriginal Freehold land with two trustees: Aurukun Shire Council, who will be the trustee of the town area and the reserve land; and Ngan Aak-Kunch Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, who will be trustee of the balance of the Shire Lease (except the Peppan lot) and the four State land lots.

Both Trustees will be responsible for managing the land that they hold and making decisions about that land on behalf of the people they hold the land for.
The Council will retain Local Government responsibility for all the land.

Aurukun will now move forward with great hope and can look forward to a great future.
