Council staff join community volunteers for Graffiti Removal Day

Shoalhaven City Council staff joined community volunteers and Rotary Down Under members removing further vandalism within the Nowra CBD as part of Graffiti Removal Day held last Sunday.

An annual event, Graffiti Removal Day serves as a unique way to highlight the problems associated with vandalism while encouraging community members to assist in the removal of graffiti.

Mayor Joanna Gash said Council staff combined with 10 community volunteers to remove over 30 tags from five separate buildings within O’Connell Lane in the Nowra CBD as part of the event.

“Graffiti Removal Day is an innovative event that allows local residents to join the fight against vandalism.

“I would certainly like to congratulate each of the hard working volunteers on the amazing job they have done within O’Connell’s Lane.

“Working in hot and humid conditions, the group has successfully eradicated all signs of vandalism from one of the area’s renowned graffiti hot spots.”
Graffiti Removal Day followed the Council’s recent ‘Graffiti Blitz’ within the Nowra CBD.

The month long blitz has seen Council staff remove over 100 tags on private property adjacent to public areas within the Nowra CBD.

“Council’s recent ‘Graffiti Blitz’ has made serious inroads into the removal of vandalism from private property visible from public areas within the Nowra CBD,” said Cr Gash.

“It has been extremely pleasing to see the difference the blitz has made across the CBD.

“I have received endless compliments from community members who are extremely pleased to see this unwanted graffiti removed from private property.
“Council is now seeking the cooperation and commitment of local businesses in keeping their property graffiti free.”
