Councillor profiles – This month from New South Wales

History with local government
My involvement in local politics began when I formed a close friendship with Morris Iemma when he became the new local member in my region. We teamed up to lobby the then Liberal State Government for a pedestrian bridge over King Georges Rd at Beverly Hills North Public School.

I had always been involved in this community and consider being a councillor an extension of that role.

In September 1999 I was approached to run for council, preselected and subsequently elected. I was appointed mayor upon the retirement of Mayor Robert Furolo in November 2011, and elected in September 2012: a memorable moment in my career.

I am proud of a number of achievements during my time in politics.

In light of a range of reforms facing local councils, I led the establishment of the Sydney Metropolitan Mayors group that represents Sydney metropolitan councils.  The group consists of Mayors representing 22 councils who have come together with a true desire to promote the importance of Local Government – a view that has genuine bi-partisan support.

Over these 14 years I have been involved in many programs, however an achievement I am particularly proud of is setting up our Library Homework program that has been running for over a decade.

Nature and community
I am proud of the Riverwood wetlands transformation in the City of Canterbury that has seen a previously open drain become a popular community asset featuring playgrounds, picnic facilities and a wetland with fish, turtles, birdlife and other animals.

The City of Canterbury also has a long-standing commitment to the rehabilitation of the Cooks River.

I chair the Cooks River Alliance and, in partnership with other councils along the river, we are taking the steps needed to bring the Cooks River back to a healthy state.

Riding a bike along the Cooks River is a great way for a family to enjoy the great outdoors.

In addition to the rehabilitation of the Cooks River, being able to maintain a safe environment to live and bring up a family is an important issue to me.
The City of Canterbury is one of the most multi-cultural areas in Australia with a population of around 145,000 and well over 150 different national groups.

Our city is a true multicultural area and an example of what positive things diversity can bring to a community.

Supporting the community
Being willing to devote time and energy to all tasks and problems presented to you is a key aspect of being a good councillor.

Talking to and understanding the problems of all ratepayers and trying to do the best for them at all times, whilst balancing the rights of other ratepayers, is also very important. Having someone thank you for your efforts on their behalf is the best part of being a councillor.

Outside of council I am the managing director of two business software companies. My involvement in the computer industry since 1970 has provided an understanding of the difficulties faced by small and medium sized business entities.

My working class background has also provided me with an understanding of problems faced by working families.

I would like the community to think of me as an honest councillor with integrity, who did his best for his community.
