Multiple awards for park

Ku-ring-gai Council has won two Parks and Leisure Australia regional awards.

Greengate Park in the suburb of Killara was awarded the regional Open Space Design and Management award and Council’s Open Space Acquisition Strategy won the regional Open Space Planning Award.

Ku-ring-gai’s Open Space Acquisition Strategy identified the need for a new local park in Killara to complement the construction of new residential apartments close to public transport.

This prompted Council to purchase three residential properties and convert them to parkland.

“Council’s landscape architects have created a safe and picturesque environment for all Killara residents to enjoy,” said Mayor Jennifer Anderson.

“I’m incredibly proud of our work on the Greengate Park and the fact it has won two prestigious awards goes to show what a huge success the park has been, not only with Killara residents, but it’s always nice to get due recognition from a professional body like Parks and Leisure Australia.”

Completed in 2013, Greengate Park has become a popular child-friendly space that encourages healthy outdoor activities.

The second award was presented in the category of ‘strategic planning for open space’, and recoginesed the ‘Open Space Acquisition Strategy’ that highlighted the need for Greengate park to be constructed.

This is the second award this year for the program, following a previous accolade from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.

Winners of the regional awards are automatically submitted to the National Awards that will be announced in August 2014.

The awards program was created to help foster business and public understanding of the importance of excellence in the parks and leisure sector to the social, environmental, economic and physical wellbeing of all Australians.
