Funding shored up for river walls

The City of South Perth has welcomed the State Government announcement of $500,000 in funding to repair and replace the Swan River walls along the South Perth Foreshore.

The further funding will enable the City to upgrade and replace the aging river walls either side of the Mends St jetty, that have been fenced off for the past two years as a safety measure.

The South Perth Foreshore at Mends Street is the most prominent location of the City and attracts thousands of visitors each week.

The funding from the State Government, along with matching funds from the City will enable the replacement of the river walls in this location.

The walls either side of the prominent Mends St Jetty location will be replaced with new limestone walls that will feature contemporary flat capping for comfortable sitting.

The wall will incorporate a wave deflection curve over the riverside of the wall and is a proven design for river wave management.

Work on the replacement of the walls is expected to commence by September this year, with works to be completed before 2015.

The latest funding announcement follows on from last year’s budget allocation of $500,000, with the Minister for Environment indicating that another $350,000 would be allocated next year to complete the $1.35 million election commitment.

Following the replacement of the river wall, the City plans to extend the pathway alongside the river a minimum width of five meters to comfortably accommodate people promenading and exercising along the river foreshore.
