Old Port Hedland Pioneer Cemetery restoration begins

Restoration works that pay tribute to Port Hedland’s heritage and provide a peaceful place of reflection have commenced at Old Port Hedland Pioneer Cemetery.

Mayor Howlett said that the works follow two years of extensive archaeological surveys, research and community consultation.

“The $780,000 upgrade, which has been made possible with the generous support of BHP Billiton Iron Ore ($486,000) and Lottery West ($293,000), will provide a more inviting, attractive, peaceful place of reflection.

“The new design pays homage to historic and culturally significant links to Port Hedland’s pioneering days and acknowledges the multicultural history of the site and Aboriginal ancestral remains.

“The project will see the installation of pathways, shade structures, memorial walls and minimal landscaping to reflect the Pilbara environment and sensitivity of the site.

“The cemetery was used as a burial ground until 1968 for variety of cultural groups including Aboriginal, Asian and European descent highlighting our multicultural history.

”Today we know that Old Port Hedland Cemetery is a significant landmark to our residents and the memory of the people buried in the cemetery is still strong in the hearts of loved ones.

“Consultation and planning works commenced in 2012 in response to community feedback to repair and maintain the cemetery.

“We’ve worked closely with community members, traditional elders and relatives of those interred to get and understanding of the significance of the site and the stories of those buried.

“The advice, anecdotes and feedback has really shaped the final result, a sensitive and subtle upgrade of the Old Port Hedland Cemetery that is in line with community wishes and recognises the heritage values of the site.

“A key part of the works will be the installation of a memory wall at the southern end of the cemetery.

“The piece is being developed by public artist Jahne Rees from Scape-ism and pays tribute to all of those interred here, in marked and unmarked graves.

“It will also include seating and shaded trees to provide a quiet place for reflection within the grounds.”
