City of Fremantle wins national gold

A unique revitalisation strategy, an award-winning festival and events program, planning scheme amendments, an innovative ‘Fremantle. Be part of the story’ marketing program and the growth of quality visitor services and initiatives has resulted in a gold victory for the City of Fremantle at the 2014 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards.

Announced in Adelaide on Friday April 10, the City of Fremantle won gold in the Local Government Award for Tourism category; only one of two gold awards won by Western Australia this year.

The Local Government Award for Tourism category is open to local government cities and councils that demonstrate a substantial economic impact on the community, attracting a wide range of tourists and positively promoting a destination.

Other category finalists included the Barossa Council in South Australia, Murrindindi Shire Council in Victoria and Cairns Regional Council in Queensland.

“The award is a fantastic achievement and important recognition of councils’ strategic approach to economic development and tourism projects with the goal to revitalise Fremantle as Perth’s undisputed second city,” said Fremantle Mayor Dr Brad Pettitt, who accepted the award.

The City of Fremantle welcomes over one million visitors each year.

While the City of Fremantle has won silver awards at the Western Australian Tourism awards in 2012 and 2013, it is the first time the City has progressed to the national level in the Local Government Award for Tourism category.

The annual Australian Tourism Awards, now in its 29th year, is a celebration of the highest achievements in the Australian tourism industry.
