Have your say… Letters to the editor

Dear LG Focus
Several months ago I asked the question of whether local government mergers/amalgamations generated the politicians’ promises of increased efficiency and efficacy in service delivery.

The question was put to those LGAs which had merged. The question was to establish quantitative evidence. To date none seem to have been able to identify those benefits.

My question falls into the context of your article on P 15 of May 2015 LG Focus by ACELG: Councils learning from Councils.

Do we need to fall back on the old saw: “The thing history teaches us is that we learn nothing from history.”

Come on all you experienced Councils, let it all hang out, good, bad or indifferent, but put some numbers against them.

Regards,
Hugh Richardson
South Ward Councillor
City of Subiaco, WA.

Dear LG Focus,
In response to Councillor Alan Haselden’s letter on the issue of expanded polystyrene packaging, there is an alternative, developed some years ago in the U.S. and now being used by many companies, but unfortunately is not yet available in Australia.

The product is made by combining waste agricultural produce and a part of mushrooms called mycelium, and is fully home compostable.

The company is Ecovative Design and is has won a number of environment awards.  More details can be found on their website www.ecovativedesign.com

It would be wonderful if they would establish a factory in Australia, as the concept is a great one.

Regards
Helen Harris OAM
Greens Councillor,
City of Whitehorse, VIC
