City councils in four states have chosen Howard Australia’s Condor mower, buying on the strength of trials and demonstrations during the past 12 months.
The heavy duty Condor has proved a popular choice with its advanced design, unique features and safe, efficient operation. The mower is being used at turf clubs and golf courses, as well as keeping parks, sports ovals, grounds and roadsides in good order for councils and grass contractors.
This measure of success prompted Howard Australia to begin trials with an 8-foot rigid frame prototype, which has the same design advantages as the winged Condor. Trials with a Victorian city council are underway and operators have already reviewed the new machine very favourably.
Howard Australia’s Trevor Telford said the company’s program of onsite Condor mower demonstrations is still in full swing.
“If you can’t talk to someone who’s actually using a Condor mower, a demo is the next best way to learn how efficient and versatile it is.
“With a strong swing-tip blade system and high blade tip speed of 90 metres a second at the blade end, you’re going to get a clean cut in a wide range of conditions.
“The thickness of the blade means it can handle light maintenance and also tackle heavy wet grass up to 300mm, which is where other mowers can run into trouble. And you can use the Condor on tractors from 44.7kW to 82kW.”
The Condor mower is 3.61m wide with a 3.49m cutting width and full-width 165mm diameter rollers. It has a hot-dipped galvanised body for easy cleaning. The adjustable front roller allows precise height control from ground level to 100mm.
Front chains give longer grass better entry to the cutting chamber, and design improvements to belt engagement and larger drive pulleys minimise belt slippage in heavy conditions.
The Condor folds to 2.35m for transport and locks securely into place with a spring-loaded pin. The wings also lock into place with a convenient hydraulic safety lock. To prevent accidental lowering during transit, the electrohydraulic safety switch must be activated at the same time as the tractor hydraulics.
Howard engineer Robert Condon designed the New Zealand-built Condor mower in response to widespread industry demand for a versatile heavy-duty mower and the Condor’s capabilities continue to exceed expectations.
The 8-foot rigid frame prototype currently being trialled (and too new to have a name) is expected to be in production soon.
