Talent pipeline at Toowoomba Regional Council
The Generator Program at Toowoomba Regional Council commenced in 2009 as a ‘Grow your Own’ approach to developing staff and to enable employment pathways for undergraduate and graduate students to connect with Council and start their careers.
The program consists of a total of 29 positions with a focus on Engineering (25), Information Technology (2) and Human Resource Management (2) disciplines as a pipeline for key professional roles. With an 80% retention rate since the program commenced, it has been viewed as an effective program enabling the Toowoomba Regional Council to attract and retain emerging talent.
The program consists of four engineering scholarship positions, eight internships, seven cadetships and ten graduate positions. The Generator Program includes monthly networking meetings, professional development, job rotations through all functions of their discipline and support through mentoring to ensure a wide range of learning and development opportunities.
In the case of Engineering, Council has a close working relationship with the University of Southern Queensland and an ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) agreement with Engineers Australia which supports graduate engineers to achieve their chartered accreditation and to obtain Registered Professional Engineers Queensland status.
