More than rates and rubbish

Hobsons Bay City Council in Victoria is undertaking a 100-day campaign to highlight 100 services it provides to its community.

The social media campaign, known as 100 Services in 100 Days, is aimed at raising community awareness and better connecting people with the many valued services that Council provides.

The community is encouraged to comment on the Council’s Facebook and Twitter posts, and like and share among their friends.

Mayor of Hobsons Bay Peter Hemphill said councils needed to get better at letting people know where their rates dollars were spent and provide more information about the many great services offered by their councils.

“It is a hell of a lot more than just the maintenance of roads and rubbish collection, and I hope this campaign will help people understand the scope and breadth of these services.

“I think people will be surprised when they see how much we actually do and what we provide.”

Wetlands Ward Councillor Colleen Gates, who initiated the program, said that occasionally there is confusion around what services are the responsibility of the local, state or federal government.

“There are also some perceptions in the community that our rates are only spent on capital projects and infrastructure.

“Approximately one third of the annual rate dollar collected is used to fund capital works.

“The other two thirds are invested into the support and delivery of these many services available to the community.

“We hope this campaign will help our community recognise some of the services that they may already use and value, or possibly increase demand for these services, which are all good things.”

As well as social media, 100 Services in 100 Days will also be publically displayed on Council’s audio visual screens at its customer service centres and libraries.

The campaign has been developed by Council staff and only represents some of the many services provided by Council. The creative for the campaign has been made available to other councils across Victoria.
