The District Council of Yankalilla in South Australia is sponsoring a local young person to take part in a world-renowned development challenge.
The District Council of Yankalilla is one hour from Adelaide and consists of a population of about 4400. The area is home to large expanses of dairy farms, grazing lands, pine forests and conservation parks. It also has 80 kms of rugged coastline with 25 kms of clean sandy beaches where the hills meet sea and the rivers meet the cooling waters of Gulf St Vincent and Backstair’s Passage.
The Council is participating in a world-renowned program, Operation Flinders – which is transforming the lives of vulnerable or at-risk young people, by helping them to break away from their pasts and grow as valued members of the community.
The Council is offering one local teenager the opportunity to take part in the unique outback intervention program.
“Council will be taking the lead in supporting the young people in the area to participate in this program, which we know will give them the opportunity to help them to turn their lives around,” said Jonathon Robran from Operation Flinders.
The South Australian-based charitable organisation runs the leading, evidence-based outback intervention program for teenagers aged 14 to 18, which runs for eight days in the far northern Flinders Ranges.
“Their mission is to provide young men and women with demanding outdoor challenges and support, to help them develop their personal attitudes and values of self-esteem, motivation, team-work and responsibility,” said Council Chief Executive Officer Nigel Morris.
“Council will sponsor one young person from our local area to take part in this valuable program in the current financial year and we’re excited to see this relationship with Operation Flinders grow.”
In addition to further support youth in the district in August 2016 Council adopted a brand new Individual Grants for Youth and Students Policy that provides grant funding in recognition of local youth and student residents who have achieved excellence in sport, education, cultural or other eligible fields, to assist them to participate as a district, state or national representative in a sporting, cultural, academic or other eligible competition or event.
