Outdoor staff members at Cessnock City Council have been sporting pink uniforms in support of breast cancer awareness from August to October.
The staff-led initiative is a part of the New South Wales council’s employee giving program, in which staff can make a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Breast cancer is an issue that hits home for many in Cessnock as one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer nationally.
Council employees hope their pink hi-vis shirts and vests contribute to raising awareness and funding around early prevention as early diagnosis gives a person the best chance of survival.
Director of Works and Infrastructure Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr said Council is immensely proud of staff for getting involved with
this initiative.
“This is a fantastic way for everyone to support a worthy cause, while raising funds and awareness in the community,” Mr Fitzpatrick-Barr said.
“It really highlights the sense of pride and community spirit that exists in our workforce.”
The response from Cessnock staff has been positive. Staff member Craig Howell said, “I am not afraid to wear pink to show support for breast cancer.”
His co-worker, Matt Margery, agreed: “It is great for morale to have to have everyone wearing pink for a good cause.”
National Breast Cancer Awareness month runs throughout October.
