New skin for iconic rhinos

Ahead of hosting the Artlands Conference, Dubbo Regional Council granted their iconic rhino statues a fresh lick of paint.

Local high school students were invited to enter a competition to have their artwork displayed on one of the four iconic rhino sculptures located at the entrance to Dubbo.

Administrator Michael Kneipp unveiled the winning designs in late October.

“The rhino sculptures first came to Dubbo as part of the Rhino Adventure campaign and are now an iconic representation of the region,” said Mr Kneipp.

He said utilising the sculptures was a “perfect way to showcase the superb talent of our young residents”.

The four winners – Jessica Betts, Will Hazzard, Belle Lordan and Zoe Monaro – attended the unveiling.

“The work these students have produced, under the guidance of artist Jack Randell, is fantastic,” said Mr Kneipp.

“The unveiling of this sculptures just days before the beginning of the Artlands Conference is perfect timing as it gives delegates arriving for Artlands a taste of the depth of artistic talent we have here in Dubbo.

“It was a pleasure to have NSW Regional Arts CEO Elizabeth Rogers at the unveiling to talk about the importance of artistic endeavours such as this.”

The Artlands Conference is a biennial forum and arts festival, which ran from 27-30 October.
