Drivers help monitor roads

Moree Plains Shire Council in northern New South Wales is collaborating with residents to identify unsafe sections of roads. A recent Council-run online survey asked drivers around Moree Plains to identify sections of unsealed roads that they consider unsafe or needing attention.

Council’s Road Safety Officer Renee McMillian said Council is using the ‘Safe System’ approach to improving road safety and asking drivers to provide local knowledge about road conditions and driving behaviours.

“The campaign focuses on motorist’s behaviour and their awareness of conditions on unsealed local roads.

“The key message, ‘You don’t have to be speeding to be driving too fast’, addresses appropriate speed selection on local unsealed roads, urging motorists to slow down and drive to conditions.

“What is concerning is that in the last five years [from 2010 to 2014] there were 36 crashes that occurred on unsealed roads in Moree Plains, resulting in 38 people being injured.”

By completing the survey, community members are able to help Council identify any unsealed roads that may need to be part of a wider road safety audit and also provide a broader understanding of road behaviours.

As an incentive, entrants went into a draw to win up to $500 in fuel vouchers.
