The Town of Gawler in South Australia has completed improvements to the outdoor facilities in Gawler’s Pioneer Park, which includes the construction of the Gawler Bike Hub.
Jointly funded by the Australian Government through the National Stronger Regions Fund, the Gawler Bike hub is part of the region’s first Active Town Precinct and includes a bike repair station, lockers, bike racks and an electric charging station.
Positioned behind the Gawler Visitor Information Centre, the precinct includes shaded tables and seating areas plus upgraded amenities, which also provide for disability access.
Main Street businesses will benefit from the Active Town Precinct project. Increased retail and tourism activity is expected from more visitors and events at the Park. The Gawler Bike Hub is well positioned near the Gawler Visitor Information Centre where bikes can be hired to tour the town and region. Cyclists with their own bikes or those who hire a bike can now stop and spend money in Gawler.
The electric charging station will support the growing popularity of electric vehicles that generate large savings in greenhouse gas and improve air quality by providing public health benefits to the region. Older people who use mobility scooters won’t need to stay at home to recharge their scooters, they can enjoy the open air, engage and socialise.
“Active environments strengthen communities – they give people a greater sense of cohesion and… to have more positive attitudes,” said Mayor Redman.
“This project sets a new standard in activating outdoor space and will establish Gawler as the region’s leading active, clean and green community.”
