Mornington Peninsula Shire, Victoria, is trialling electric vehicles for potential inclusion in its fleet in an ongoing commitment towards carbon neutrality.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor, Bryan Payne, said Council is taking action to ensure a better future for the peninsula.
“Electric vehicles can have zero tailpipe emissions when powered by renewable energy and will be considered in our efforts to lead the way on tackling the climate change challenge.”
Councillors and Shire officers will trial the cars for a week and feedback to council.
The trial adds to the Shire’s list of actions to minimise carbon emission generation such as the replacement of more than 10,000 street lights to LED globes, development of a Carbon Neutral Policy, and consolidation of waste services.
Shire delegates have met with local and international representatives to share information and ideas on advancements in the areas of Alternative Waste Technology; Climate Change Adaptation & Resilience; Fire, Cyclone and Flood Disaster Management and Recovery, to bring back knowledge and learnings to apply on the Peninsula.
The Mayor said, “It’s important we continue to learn from our peers and join other local government delegates to foster and strengthen the exchange of information and experience.”
