City of Canning’s first ever Pitch It! event indicates a bright future for Western Australia with some of Perth’s smartest students coming together to pitch their waste app ideas.
The students met with members of the City’s waste team and listened to challenges the waste team face.
Under the mentorship of Just Start It (an organisation that brings Silicon Valley methodologies into the classroom and helps teams to create technology start-ups) they developed, validated and finalised their waste app ideas and pitched them to a panel of City of Canning judges.
The winners of the Pitch It! event were Samyuktha Ramesh and Vishal Ramesh from Rossmoyne Senior High School. The brother and sister duo created an app called ‘Trash Talk’ which helps Canning residents to identify rubbish and drive better waste management behaviours.
The app will be worked on and implemented as a long term strategy.
The City will also roll out the other team’s ideas ‘Toss It’ and ‘Bin It’ as short term campaigns.
All of the students who participated in the Pitch It! event will be recognised for their efforts and will receive an additional credit towards their Western Australian Certificate of Education.
