The Shire of Augusta Margaret River Council has approved the Gracetown surf break, North Point for the 2018 Margaret River Pro for the third consecutive year.
Shire President Pam Townshend said it was a fantastic outcome not only for the local community, but also for the South West region and Western Australia (WA).
“We are very excited to see the continuance of this event, which brings a range of benefits to our region and State.”
Community groups, businesses, and community members showed their overwhelming support for the event with numerous expressions of support received prior and during Wednesday’s council meeting.
Councillor Townshend noted the positive steps event organisers Surfing WA were taking to improve environmental and traffic management in Gracetown.
“Council can see that Surfing WA and World Surf League are committed to responsible environmental management and are consulting closely with local environmental groups.
“If the surfing conditions are favourable to warrant use of North Point during this year’s competition, we are confident traffic flows, parking and management of our precious heathland will be well taken care of.”
Cr Townshend said the event shines a bright light on their beautiful region and draws in huge economic benefits through awareness of the region.
“The World Surf League competition in Margaret River equates to over $35m in destination advertising and brings an injection of over $5m into our local economy, with the majority of contractors used for the event being local.
“Beyond these benefits, the Pro also offers social engagement opportunities, healthy living messages, environmental education and awareness, and other educational opportunities.”
