Since inception, the Shire of Kondinin’s community garden on the site of the former swimming pool, continues to grow and evolve thanks to the community and various state government grants.
In recent months, the Shire situated 275 km east of Perth in the heart of Western Australia’s Golden Outback, has partnered with local community groups to hold a number of activities and events at the Community Garden.
In March, the second Gourmet in the Garden event attracted over 100 people to mingle under the leafy boughs to a background of live music.
They dined on local produce from the Garden cooked by Sophie Budd of Taste Budd Studios, in an elaborately decorated marquee.
The event also unveiled the name of resident galvanized iron chook ‘Princess Layer’ who has a prominent place in the garden!
More recently, a series of artwork panels designed by Kondinin Primary School children were plasma cut by members of the Kondinin Art Group and installed, depicting things a child would find in a garden.
The Shire was also fortunate to receive funding from the Natural Resource Management Community Stewardship Program which enabled the planting of a variety of bush tucker plants and inviting local seed collector and a local Nyoongar elder to talk to the Kondinin Primary School students on what the bush tucker plants are used for.
During NAIDIC week the Shire teamed up with the Kondinin Community Resource Centre to meet with local school children at the fire pits and cook up some tasty damper.
The Kondinin Community Garden is well worth a stopover for a game in the nature play area, a walk through the garden and to view the variety of artwork on show.
