Construction Code changes affect councils*

Access and Universal Design provides support for councils to understand the new requirements.

2019 will bring many changes for councils in relation to access requirements and obligations in buildings and facilities.

An updated National Construction Code commencing in May will require some buildings to incorporate Adult Change Facilities to support people with high physical support needs in using toilets in public spaces.

In addition, the Housing Options Paper, released in 2018 by the Australian Building Codes Board, will form the basis for changes relating to ‘liveability’ requirements for residential properties.

Along with this, are new specific access requirements for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Access Institute has been working with governments and other relevant industry bodies Australia wide to develop and deliver training for councils in these areas, to ensure each council can address the unique needs of its community.

Whilst some requirements are national others are state based and it is important for councils to understand what their obligations are and how to implement these changes moving forward.

Access Institute is highly experienced in working with local government and can assist all councils with their access, inclusion and Universal Design training needs and projects.

Access Institute Director, (Ms.) Joe Manton, is a past local government director, with a comprehensive understanding of council operations and the unique challenges faced by councils in addressing access and inclusion issues.

Contact Access Institute now to discuss your requirements and to book your in-house tailored training sessions at info[@]accessinstitute.com.au or (03) 9988 1879.
