The City of Moonee Valley, just five kilometres from Melbourne’s centre, is celebrating its finest natural asset the Maribyrnong River.
Plans to develop the waterway, as a key environmental, social and cultural asset and tourism attractor, will come together in the creation of the Maribyrnong River Cultural Precinct (Illuminate Maribyrnong River).
Council has been thrilled with the response to the Illuminate Maribyrnong River project with suggestions flowing in as to how it can protect and enhance this much loved precinct for future generations.
More shade trees, a community garden, additional exercise equipment and more opportunities for water activities are just some of the community’s ideas for the precinct.
Play equipment for older kids, better equipment for the younger ones, more walking paths and improved pedestrian access and crossings are also a priority for people who visit the River regularly
or live nearby.
People also love existing features such as the off lead dog area at Aberfeldie Park, access to a range of sports at Maribyrnong and Aberfeldie Parks, and the Incinerator Gallery.
Mayor, Narelle Sharpe, said Council would review the feedback in coming months and create a draft vision for the area to guide future improvements and determine priority projects for the River precinct.
“It’s an area of the municipality that we know people love and enjoy. We want to make it the best it can be and we need to hear from the community to ensure we share the same ideas for the future.”
