The Property Council Western Australia’s Emerging Stronger Together Report has identified Cannington as a key activity centre for the State Government to invest in as Western Australia starts to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Developed by property, infrastructure and sustainability leaders, the Report outlines 10 initiatives, including affordable housing and city building, to ensure Western Australia emerges from the pandemic with a diverse, sustainable and strong economy.
Mayor, Patrick Hall said the Report recommends infrastructure investment from the State Government to design, build and operate key activity centres for achieving vibrant and economically sustainable communities.
“The regeneration of the Canning City Centre is a long term project with the potential to be home for up to 25,000 people.
“It will be an important and vibrant hub with direct rail access to the Perth central business district, have new green spaces for people to enjoy, improved public transport and offer new affordable housing options to Cannington.
“We’re ready to play a role in Western Australia’s post-pandemic recovery and welcome partnering with the State Government to continue achieving our vision of creating Perth’s southern CBD, delivering results that stimulate our local economy and assisting in the long term growth of the state.”
Current City Centre projects include the redevelopment of an historically fenced off stormwater basin on Wharf Street into a new public Next Generation Smart Park, delivery of the Lake Street Urban Stream and the ongoing rejuvenation of Cecil Avenue.
Other plans include increasing affordable housing options and improving access to public transport in a high density transit oriented area.
