City of Greater Geelong, Victoria, and thirty businesses in the Central Geelong Laneways Precinct are currently participating in a commercial waste and recycling trial, which is an optional service for businesses in the area.
The 12 month trial will help alleviate bin storage problems and provide more effective ways to manage commercial waste and recycling through the installation of two new compactors.
The communal compactors have been installed at the northern end of Shorts Place, with one compactor collecting general waste and the other collecting co-mingled recycling.
Other improvements from the communal compactors, which participating businesses access via swipe cards, will be a decrease in waste collection truck movement in Central Geelong and fewer waste bins visible in Geelong’s iconic laneways.
The trial was developed in response to feedback from businesses, residents and property owners in the Laneways Precinct and endorsed by Council in August 2019.
The City will gain further feedback on the trial to measure its effectiveness in managing waste and recycling in the area.

“This trial will hopefully provide many benefits to the businesses and residents in the Laneways Precinct and it’s great to see this clever and creative initiative driven by the community.
